So the snow has, fingers crossed, finally gone. Brrrrrr. Sadly it’s still cold and as a result I’ve been subsisting on tea, onigiri and beans on toast … and ramen. Yes I have the world’s …

Battlestar Galactica: The Oath (Episode Review)

Submitted by Lesley on Wednesday, 4 February 2009No Comment

Needless to say: HERE BE SPOILERS!

Gaeta’s descent into traitordom gets even more painful this week. Now the pawn/partner of (ex-)vice president Tom Zarek, the plucky young lieutenant starts putting his plan to take over the Galactica into action. Mutiny is such an ugly word and yet by the end of this episode, you wonder if Gaeta truly understands the depth of what he’s doing and if he is just blind-sighted by rage and hatred of the Cylons. Yet the irony is the situation is not lost; the Cylons despite their technology and numbers, could not destroy the humans but their own internal battle just might.

Gaius Baltar’s harem of sycophantic females are just annoying but do remind you that the Fleet’s resident Messiah still has a role to play, even if it’s a small one by providing Roslin with a wireless transmitter. The episode is a nice look into the parts of the ship we might have forgotten about but it’s so focuses on the events splitting the fleet that it’s easy to forget that there are also civilians and Cylons who will be affected by Gaeta’s actions.

The problem is, as the episodes count on down, it feels like way too much is happening for any decent resolution. While predictable, this episode was very enjoyable. A bit of fast-paced action compared to the normal sedate pace of the series. It’s nice to see the lines between good and bad, human and Cylon become shades of grey but the next episode cannot come soon enough.

Questions raised in this episode include:

  • What the FRAK is Kara Thrace?
  • What will the Cylons do about Gaeta’s rebellion?
  • What secret was Baltar alluding to when he spoke to Gaeta?
  • What will happen to Caprica Six and the other Cylons in the brig?
  • Where will Ellen Tigh next pop up?
