Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock (Episode Review)

Submitted by Lesley on Thursday, 26 February 2009No Comment

Needless to say: HERE BE SPOILERS!

So, it’s time for a catch up with the Fleet. Last episode, Boomer broke Ellen Tigh out of Cavil’s basestar forcing an inevitable reunion with Saul and the rest of the Final Five. It’s gotta be good right? Especially when you add in Anders’ brain damage and the whole Saul-Six toaster in the oven. Oh, such promise! So how did this episode fare?Well Ellen, once seeming goddess-like as she spouted her knowledge over her wayward son John Cavil, is suddenly mortal once more. She realises Saul has been unfaithful and with one of her children no less and goes …. well a bit nuts. Yes she is suddenly pissed and her anger blinds her to everything else that’s happening on Galactica. Indeed it’s hard to tell if she’s more furious with Saul or at the fully Cylon child in Caprica Six’s belly and this leads to tragic but predictable conclusion which ties up Caprica Six’s storyline sloppily to say the least, even if it does take her out of the picture. Yes, there’s no room for Caprica in Saul and Ellen’s marriage so best to just kill her now and be done with it.

But it is a tad heartbreaking …. and proves that the only way the Fleet can survive is if humans and Cylons learn to live together in some kind of harmony.

Choice is at the centre of the episode, the Cylons want to leave the Fleet, convinced that Caprica’s child is the promise of their tomorrow, the beginning of a new society. So ingrained in their society is the concept of majority rules that it splits the Five, you reasons some are still human while others – specifically Tory – have become as cold as stone. Humans meanwhile are fighting amongst themselves and Baltar (aided once more by Virtual Six) rejoins his harem to discover them taking on shades of an American cult, asking God for guns is never a good sign. I can’t help wondering if he will be their saviour or something much, much darker. Does he even believe or is it just another mask?

The thing is, the episode is just continual arguments. Good and bad intentions lead to terrible consequences for all cornered. Will the Fleet ever find the peace and home it so desperately needs? I must admit, this week’s episode (Starbuck-centred, thankfully) looks yo be a lot more entertaining. Perhaps we might even get to find out what the frak is going on with her destiny! The end is coming, so must the answers.

Finally, we might actually find out what the frak is going on with Starbuck! YAY!
