Living the Freelance Dream: The ‘I’m a boxset addict’ edition

Submitted by Lesley on Friday, 12 June 2009No Comment

Ah summer. Balmy evenings with a cider in hand, watching Ce-chan frolic while her mother snoozes safely inside. Bliss. Tonight was wonderful – except no cider because I have a cold – at least until Ceridwen decided it was time to investigate my neighbours homes. She’s a nosey little madam.

Ce-chan loves playing with the neighbour’s cat. Said cat is pretty laid back and lets Ceri and the cat around the corner walk all over her. Literally. Ceri decided it was time to explore my neighbour’s house and ended up on the third floor under her eldest’s bed, stuck behind a dollhouse. Great.

Said eldest got her out and I took her home but Ceri needs to learn what curiosity did to one of her relatives. You’d think Mama Isis might have told her all about that. Either way, she’s having a whale of a time in the outside world, even if she insists on marking her territory by pissing everywhere.

But Ceridwen aside, this week has been another work-intensive one. I got paid – yay – which means it was time to indulge my boxset addiction. To be fair I do buy them for work purposes, not only as background noise but also because I often need to refer to them for features. Seriously. I shit you not.

This week it was House. I picked up series 1-4 on Amazon and have been devouring the series ever since. I’m midway through series two and I am completely addicted. It does concern me just a little that a bunch of doctors can’t diagnose things but this is where you remind yourself it’s fiction. Plus they do a lot of lumbar punctures/inducing of medical comas … ouch. Still, it’s like a murder mystery in a hospital without a murder. Awesome.

But yeah, boxsets. I have lots of them from anime to movies. They come in handy when I have a feature to write. I find the noise distracts part of me and allows me to get on with my work.  I try not to buy lots but every so often a purchase is warranted. Those and books are my biggest spend.

So what am I up to this week? Well tomorrow I’m planning on going out, there’s a farmer’s market in town and Norwich calls me. I like to wander with my camera, feeling the hustle and bustle. My Parental Unit is bringing my niece round next week for a couple of hours and I’m quite excited, even if I’m not sure how Ce-chan and Mama Isis will react. Immie is an angel, when she’s asleep she’s innocence personified but when she’s awake she screams like a banshee. Mum has been going over there and walking little Immie in her pram just so Cheryl can get some much-needed kip. Bless.

That aside it’s work as usual. I get paid on Friday (I think), just in time to drool over the new iPhone, even if I can’t get one. I’m looking forward to the firmware update though, that should be fun. I like getting paid, it means I can balance my books and have cash for my accountant. Heck I might even be able to put some away for Japan this month. You never know. I can but hope.
