Help: Why can’t I remember the name of this book? (UPDATED and found)
When I was a kid, I loved Greek mythology. Heck, I still do and it’s not just Greek but Egyptian, Roman … you name it. When I was in sixth form I found a book in our library and I loved it. The problem is I can’t remember the title or author. The cover was blue and featured a illustration of what I think was Poseidon in his chariot done in white against this navy cover. The actual book was a prose account of Greek myths from the perspective of Hephaistos (all the names were very Greek-versions as opposed to the normal English ones). Basically it starts with him falling into the sea and being rescued by Thetis and her sister Eurynome. As the little god – who is not aware of his godhead – grows up, the goddesses tell him stories: the Greek myths. At the end he then returns to Olympos to get his revenge on Hera who chucked him out in the first place.
There was a second book in the series but I remember it was never as good as this first volume. From what I remember the book was quite gory and filled with pencil-illustrations which weren’t exactly the kind of thing you’d show a child. I suppose that’s why I liked it. Thing is, I’m now dying to find a copy and it’s bugging me like you wouldn’t believe. It was quite an old book – at least the 70/80s – and I want to say it was called something like ‘Kingdom of the Sea’ but I honestly can’t remember. I only ever found it in hardback and it never had anything to suggest it was a book of myths. You wouldn’t know it was a volume of Greek myths otherwise, aside from the illustration on the cover. Does anyone have any idea of the title.
Edit: the lovely @Aleveria found the book! It’s The God Beneath The Sea. YAY! I have something to read to Immie when she gets older.

I read that too! Wonderfully written, especially his initial fall from grace.
