Being Human: Series Two (Preview)

Submitted by Lesley on Saturday, 9 January 2010No Comment

I’m a huge fan of Being Human and the BBC kindly sent a previews disc of episode one my way and the disc arrived earlier this week! The series continues the story of George, Mitchell and Annie, three housemates in Bristol, who also happen to be a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost. After a successful pilot episode in 2008, the Beeb commissioned a full series and now series two is about to air on BBC Three.

At the end of series one, George had finally embraced his wolfish side and found his true love in the form of coworker Nina (who has now moved in). Unfortunately he also scratched her and episode one deals with the inevitable consequences. The episode is split between discussions between Nina and Annie, as she bares her soul to her new-found ghostly friend and Mitchell and George’s attempts at hunting down vampires who have been attacking him as retribution for his murder of Herrick at the end of last series. The latest of these are Ivan and Daisy.

Series two is opportunity enough to go deeper into the shadowy mythology as well as reminding viewers this is most definitely an adult show. There’s sex and blood, as well as dark comedy and in a way it’s quite shocking to see a werewolf dying of decompression in a pool of red that really does hammer home that this is not a series for kids.

The werewolf transformation is still a little kitsch (and wolves still look like giant puppets) but on an emotional level, Being Human really gets to you. George and Nina’s relationship is at the forefront of this episode – he’s convinced something’s up and she’s trying to deal with the uncertainty of her future after being scratched by George in the last episode. Will she turn or won’t she? More importantly, will their fledgling relationship survive?

Care to guess?

At the same time, George and vampiress Daisy experience an almost instant attraction, despite the usual enmity between wolf and vampire. Her husband, Ivan, is there to watch the fireworks caused by the power vacuum but the vampires are the least of the housemates’ problems. The only odd thing about this episode is how fast both we the viewers and George totally forget about Nina. Daisy is a great character those, a bit of a nympho with a tenuous tie to the human world in the form of her elderly daughter who happens to be a patient at the hospital where George and Mitchell.

Mitchell does feel a bit like an observer in this episode, so much is happening to those around him but his history with vampire Ivan is sure to come into play later in the series.

Annie is now ‘squishy’ and determined to make the most of her afterlife. This includes getting a job at the local pub after taking the upper hand and interviewing her interviewer. She’s obviously been watching way too much of The Apprentice.

Finally there is the shadowy supernatural-obsessed organisation that seems to be hunting supernaturals – and has no problem killing a hapless werewolf when their experiment to stop him changing fails. The last scene in the episode, where the housemates take tea and beer to their gathering neighbours, while the organisation (posing as workmen from the gas board) snoop around their house sums up exactly what Mitchell wanted – to be human and accepted by the community – in the last series but also the calm before the on-coming storm.

Thank goodness this series has eight episodes! Check out the trailer below for a taste of what to expect and don’t forget to set your DVRs!

Being Human: Series Two begins on BBC Three tomorrow at 9:30pm
