Living the Dream: The ‘let it snow’ edition
Snow snow snow snow snow. It’s everywhere and just keeps on falling! We’ve had over three weeks of it now and it’s getting to the point where enough is enough. Still, it is pretty. There’s nigh on seven inches on my estate and the kids seem to be loving it. I woke up to even more of it. But there’s something beautiful about a wineglass-full of chilled Copella and a streaky bacon sarnie for breakfast (plus a Ceripuss trying to help you eat said sandwich), all highlighted by fluffy snow clouds and the glare of settled white.
Both the girls love to watch the snow. Ceri refuses to go out in it during the day though but come nightfall, it’s her playground much to Mama Isis’ concern. Isis, on the other hand has found a new snoozing spot on the smaller of my windowsills, the that’s one easily accessible from my dining table. I’ve put a soft blanket on the sill which soaks up heat from the radiator and she loves it. She can sit watching me from her lofty perch and watch the outside at the same time. It’s nice to see her there in the mornings, she headbutts and scents me as I turn up the radiator, then watches as I gather breakfast. The look on her face is what makes me smith, that look of utter contentment and love which says all is well in the world.
The snow is annoying though. I can go out in it though, even if it takes me an age to walk anywhere. The problem is more that it soon a) freezes and b) I can’t scan so am forced to use the Sightsaber more like a ski pole to gauge depth and where the kerbs end by manually poking. I’ve not fallen over yet* but it’s hardly the best time for trips into Dereham. Even the library closed early yesterday and the streets of Dereham aren’t gritted (think a mile of slush-filled narrow roads) so it really is a case of taking your life into your own hands.
As a result, I’ve stocked up on food for me and the girls and just have to wait it out. I’ve tidied drawers and spring cleaned my games collection (selling off loads that I just don’t play). I’m expecting a visit from the family tomorrow (my mother normally comes for dinner but my brother/sister-in-law and niece are also coming, weather permitting of course). However The Big Freeze (as the BBC seems to have nicknamed it) has allowed me to sit down and sort out things. I’ve been reading textbooks on teaching and sorting out my budget for the Great Japan Trip in April so all’s not lost yet.
Next week it’s life as usual. I have a feature to work on and my photography course restarts on Thursday night. I’ve got a pitch to chase, my teaching application to submit and flights to book. Oh and some hotels too. Busy busy busy – and that’s how I like it.
